The Scottish Waterfowl Club is made up of members with
enthusiasm for the keeping, breeding and, in most cases, exhibiting domestic
waterfowl of all varieties. Amongst the aims of the club are:
Membership is open to all who share these interests, newsletters are issued, special awards and rosettes are offered at all shows in Scotland where there are waterfowl classes, culminating in the Scottish National Show held each January at the Fraser Hall, Perth Agricultural Centre, East Huntingtower, Perth, where many waterfowl trophies are awarded. The annual meeting is also held there. The next show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, 24th & 25th January 2004. Membership
Help and advice is available to those who wise to "start up" keeping ducks or geese of any variety, from the delightful call ducks, which are often kept as pets that will keep the garden free of slugs and other creepy crawlies without damaging plants, to large geese kept to act as watchdogs and who will also help to keep any long grass in check. People looking just to keep pets and those keen to become breeders and exhibitors will all be welcome. Anyone trying to obtain birds is usually put in touch with the nearest established breeder who may be able to help. The best time to start up with waterfowl is late Summer/early Autumn as breeders are most likely to have birds available. Spring is more difficult as most breeders will only have their breeding stock left. The FutureAs this web site develops we will give the dates, venues and contact names, numbers for shows in Scotland. We will also provide a breeders directory as this becomes available. We would be delighted to receive articles, questions, contributions and experiences from anyone, either expert or novice, for publication in our newsletter. This is one way of learning from each other; you may have tips which could be of great help to others. |
